Amy,
Dandelion greens are crazy bitter. Better when cooked, though. Also I know someone who uses them to make a kind of noodle:
http://www.freecookingrecipes.net/pasta/dandelion-green-fettuccini
This recipe has eggs but I'm sure there's a way around that.
I have always bought mine. We have only been in our house a couple of years and the green glossy grass makes me think there were lots of chemicals used on it before that. The person to ask about eating greens from the yard is Andrea: she has been encouraging me to put sticky weed in my smoothies! The visiting dog and I walked past a yard last night that was almost totally sticky weed and I was pretty tempted to grab a few bunches, but I'm not quite up to it yet. Maybe tonight I'll go back after dark....

Have you ever eaten wild dandelion, like from your yard? Or are you purchasing it? If you've tried both, is there a difference? I've heard dandelion is intolerably bitter. Then again, I like the idea of harvesting nutrients from my yard.

Lisa, Yay for you! I need to reread Eat to Live, I think, as I have gotten less inspired and lazy over the last couple of months. But the green smoothies are still keeping me going! Meredith, I don't even remember making pear wine there! but I loved that little house, and having you over to eat. Remember when my parents made us lobster for my birthday and you wore that cute little suit? Yum!

Still have not tried one! But I feel the same way about arugula. I might feel the same way about kale -- or perhaps kale makes me want to paso doble. And I have such fond memories of your fearlessness re: foods. The first time I came over to your house (tiny, near that taco shack) you were making pear wine in the tub. Unprecedented activity!

Hey Mama

We love smoothies, but we mostly like them in the summer. Our green is generally been spirulina and the baby spinach. I didn't even notice the baby spinach taste actually, and when properly blended neither does the boy. Have you tried cleavers (sticky weed)? I bet they're growing in your backyard right now. Highly nutritious, gently cleansing lymphatically and very green.

April, thank you so much for testing these ideas and sharing your insights. We are trying a new diet/lifestyle, Eat to Live, and green smoothies have been my saving grace. My five year old partook of today's smoothie, frozen peaches, banana, avocado, spring mix, cinnamon, coconut water and a little soy yogurt. That makes two days in a row. He had the previous day's smoothie too. Fresh blueberries, banana, avocado, arugula, cocoa nibs, coconut water, flax seeds. Thank you again for posting this, I am excited to have discovered something so healthy to have for breakfast!
